MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - The Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce filled the Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center on Tuesday (2/24/2026) for its annual Business at Its Best luncheon, a tradition that brings together business leaders, elected officials, and community partners for an afternoon of recognition and reflection. Presented by Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford, the event once again lived up to its reputation as one of the county’s premiere gatherings.
BUSINESS LEGEND: Norman Brown
This year’s luncheon honored three standout leaders whose work continues to shape the economic and civic life of Rutherford County. Norman Brown was celebrated as the 2026 Business Legend, a recognition that reflects decades of influence across Middle Tennessee. As owner and president of Roscoe Brown, Inc., he guided the company’s growth from a respected local HVAC business into a major regional provider of HVAC, plumbing, and insulation services. Even as the company expanded into Nashville, Tullahoma, and McMinnville, Brown kept its family‑owned culture at the center. His service as Chamber chairman and his support for Destination Rutherford, workforce development, and education initiatives have helped define the county’s business climate.
BUSINESSPERSON OF THE YEAR: Dow Smith
The title of Businessperson of the Year went to Dow Smith, president and owner of Dow Smith Company, Inc. in Smyrna. Known for church, medical, educational, retail, and specialty‑sector construction, Smith has built one of the region’s most trusted design‑build firms. A Middle Tennessee native and Auburn graduate, he’s admired for his work ethic, his client‑first approach, and the way he blends business discipline with personal values. His steady involvement in church and civic life has strengthened both his company’s culture and his reputation as a leader who invests in the community he serves.
Leadership Rutherford's PINNACLE AWARD: Jimmy Pitts
Jimmy Pitts received Leadership Rutherford’s Pinnacle Award, the program’s highest honor. Pitts has been a driving force in Smyrna since moving there in 1999, contributing across business, civic service, youth mentorship, and faith‑based support. His leadership with the Boys & Girls Club, his service on local boards, and his role in launching the Simply Smyrna Summer Fest reflect a long‑term commitment to community impact.
The luncheon also offered the Chamber’s annual look at the state of the county’s business community, highlighting continued growth, strong economic momentum, and Murfreesboro’s standing as one of the nation’s fastest‑growing cities over 100,000 residents. With major interstate connections and a thriving business climate, Rutherford County is poised for another year of opportunity and expansion.
