MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - Folks at Murfreesboro’s First Presbyterian Church got a little extra seasoning with their Wednesday night (2/25/2026) meal—courtesy of a nationally known celebrity who showed up not to perform, but to serve. There he was, Dan Whitney himself, ladling out eggs, bread pudding, ham, and potatoes as casually as if he did it every week. Most people know him by his stage name, Larry the Cable Guy, but last night he was simply “Dan,” the friendly fellow in the camouflage outfit and baseball cap who greeted everyone with a grin.
Rev. Dr. John Hinkle, pastor of First Presbyterian, just shook his head and laughed as he watched the scene unfold. “We focus on families and a friendly atmosphere,” he said. “And honestly, Larry the Cable Guy fits that to a tee."
Whitney was in town visiting his friend Reno Collier, a Murfreesboro resident, church member, and fellow touring comedian. The two have shared stages across the country, but this time they shared a serving line—one cracking jokes, the other cracking up the congregation.
As members filed through with their trays, Larry the Cable Guy kept up a steady stream of one‑liners, teasing, chatting, and making sure no one left without both food and a laugh. People walked away shaking their heads, saying the same thing over and over: he’s warm, he’s friendly, and he’s just a regular guy… who happens to be famous enough to voice a tow truck in the Disney-Pixar's movie Cars.
The camouflage didn’t hurt either. It was exactly the look everyone expected, as if he’d stepped straight out of a comedy special and into the fellowship hall.
These days, you truly never know who you’ll run into at church—or in the ’Boro, for that matter. One week it’s a potluck, the next week it’s a potluck with Larry the Cable Guy handing you potatoes. Only in Murfreesboro does the dinner line come with a celebrity cameo and a side of comedy.
