MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) — The state’s most prestigious high school basketball honors were distributed Tuesday evening at Middle Tennessee State University’s Tucker Theater, marking a significant night for Rutherford County athletics. The 41st annual Mr. and Miss Basketball Awards ceremony celebrated elite talent across six classifications, emphasizing not only on-court dominance but also academic excellence and personal integrity.
Taking center stage for the local community, Christopher Washington, Jr. of Providence Christian Academy was officially named the Division II-A Mr. Basketball. Washington’s selection as the state's top player in his class highlights a season of exceptional performance and leadership within the PCA program.
The ceremony also cast a spotlight on Eagleville’s own Camden Cole, who represented the area as a distinguished finalist for the Class 1A Mr. Basketball award. While the top honor in that category ultimately went to Will McCrary of Jackson County, Cole’s recognition as one of the three best players in the state underscores the high caliber of talent currently emerging from the Eagleville community.
TSSAA Executive Director Mark Reeves praised the 36 finalists, noting that their presence at the event was a testament to more than just athletic statistics. Reeves remarked that the honorees were chosen for their "outstanding character and academic achievements" alongside their physical skills.
The awards, which have been a staple of Tennessee high school sports since 1985, are determined by a statewide panel of sportswriters. The committee evaluates nominations submitted by media members and head coaches, focusing on the entirety of the regular season.
