BEECHGROVE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is examining the circumstances surrounding an officer-involved shooting that occurred Monday evening in Beechgrove, a small community located about 10 minutes southeast of Murfreesboro just across the Coffee County line.

According to authorities, Craig Northcott, the District Attorney General for Tennessee’s 14th Judicial District, requested that TBI agents investigate the incident shortly after it unfolded.

Preliminary information indicates that around 5:30 p.m., investigators with the Coffee County Sheriff’s Department arrived at a residence in the 400 block of Resaca Run to execute a search warrant. When deputies arrived, they observed an occupied vehicle parked in the driveway.

Law enforcement officers issued verbal commands for the occupants to exit the vehicle, but authorities say the individuals inside refused to comply.

Investigators reported that the driver then attempted to flee the scene. During the attempt to leave the property, the vehicle struck one patrol car and allegedly tried to hit a second patrol vehicle. At that point, three officers fired their service weapons.

Officials said no one was struck by the gunfire.

Three of the four occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody by deputies following the incident.

TBI agents are now working to independently determine the sequence of events that led to the shooting. The investigation includes gathering physical evidence, reviewing the scene, and conducting interviews with those involved and potential witnesses.

Once completed, the findings will be provided to Northcott for review and consideration regarding any potential legal action.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation emphasized that its role in officer-involved shooting cases is limited to acting as fact-finders. The agency does not determine whether the actions of law enforcement officers were justified. That decision ultimately rests with the district attorney general who requested the investigation.

Consistent with agency policy, the TBI also does not identify officers involved in such incidents, referring any questions about the officers’ identities to the department involved.

The investigation remains ongoing.
