Rutherford County Schools signs agreement with Western Governors University

MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - Rutherford County Schools is adding a new avenue for teachers and staff to advance their careers, thanks to a freshly signed collaboration agreement with Western Governors University. The partnership gives RCS employees access to WGU’s professional certificates and credentials along with professional certificates and credentials designed for working adults. Employees can also apply for the $3,500 K‑12 Partner Scholarship, which helps reduce the cost of continuing their education.

The timing matters. Rutherford County Schools is the fastest‑growing and fourth‑largest school district in Tennessee, now employing about 6,600 people and serving more than 52,000 students. Like districts across the state, it faces a steady need for qualified educators, and leaders say partnerships like this one help strengthen both recruitment and retention.

With this agreement, WGU now has collaborations in place with Tennessee’s four largest districts — Memphis‑Shelby County, Metro Nashville, Knox County and Rutherford County — representing roughly 300,000 students statewide. Kimberly K. Estep, WGU’s regional vice president for the Southeast, said the goal is to make higher education more manageable for people already balancing classrooms, families and full‑time jobs. As she put it, when educators grow their own skills, students ultimately benefit.

Rutherford County Schools leaders agree. Janet Flannery, who oversees new teacher programs and recruitment, said many future teachers are already working inside Rutherford County schools as assistants, support staff or substitutes. Giving them a flexible, affordable path to a degree helps the district grow its own talent and keep strong educators in local classrooms.
