MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — A head-on collision on Interstate 840 Sunday evening left one person dead and another seriously injured, according to a preliminary report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol. The crash occurred in the Murfreesboro area near the Interstate 24 interchange, around the 53-mile marker. Authorities reported that the collision took place in the westbound lanes, but investigators believe the sequence of events began in the eastbound lanes.

According to state troopers, a 19-year-old driver, identified as Brookelyn Whitaker, was traveling eastbound on I-840 in a 2015 Nissan Altima when her vehicle left the roadway and entered the center median. The preliminary report indicates that the Altima then re-entered traffic by crossing into the westbound lanes, where it collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle.

The second vehicle involved was a 2008 Saturn Outlook driven by 62-year-old Glenda Herron. Troopers reported that Herron, driving the small SUV, was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash but still sustained serious injuries. The extent of those injuries has not been publicly disclosed.

Authorities confirmed that Whitaker, the young lady driving the 4-door Altima, died as a result of the crash.

The collision occurred shortly before 6:00 p.m. Emergency responders and law enforcement remained on the scene for several hours. As of approximately 8:00 p.m., witnesses reported that crews were still actively investigating the crash at the scene and working to clear debris from both the roadway and the median.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
