MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) — Rutherford County is reflecting on the life of a local sports icon following the passing of Gary Johnson at the age of 80. A man whose name became synonymous with discipline, faith, and athletic excellence, Johnson passed away on Monday, March 23rd, surrounded by the legacy of a life spent in service to others.

Johnson’s journey in local sports began at Murfreesboro Central High, where he served as the captain of the basketball team and earned MVP and State Honors. After a nine-year tenure with Coca-Cola, he returned to academia, graduating Magna Cum Laude from Middle Tennessee State University in 1976. His professional coaching career took root in Eagleville, where he led the boys' basketball program for eight years before moving to Oakland High School. At Oakland, he spent 25 years coaching both basketball and golf, eventually being honored with an induction into the Oakland Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023.

In addition to his storied career in education and athletics, Johnson was a pillar of Northside Church. As a Deacon and leader of the Men at Work Ministry, he was frequently seen roofing houses, building ramps, and providing manual labor for those less fortunate. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Brenda Nipper Johnson, his two sons, Scott and Robbie, and a large extended family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation will held this Thursday, March 26th, from 11:00 AM until the 2:00 PM service at Northside Church on West Thompson Lane. The family has requested that memorials be made to Northside Church in lieu of flowers.
