La VERGNE, TN (WGNS) - The La Vergne Police Department celebrated both new beginnings and hard‑earned accomplishments during a ceremony Friday (3/27/2026) at La Vergne City Hall. The event welcomed a newly hired officer and recognized a recent academy graduate, marking another step in the department’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its ranks. The ceremony opened with the swearing‑in of Officer Jonathan Backus, anacademy graduate, who chose to continue his law enforcement career in La Vergne. Police Chief Christopher Moews administered the oath and spoke warmly about the department’s momentum.
“It’s great to have him become a part of this family here in La Vergne,” Moews said. “We’re growing, filling our vacancies, and getting to the point where we can expand opportunities for our officers, from special units to task force positions, and continue building a stronger department.”
Backus’ wife pinned his badge as he thanked the department for the opportunity to serve. He said he looks forward to working alongside the officers and supervisors who help shape the agency’s culture.
The ceremony then shifted to Officer Keller Nail, who recently graduated from the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy. His father, Jason Nail, pinned his badge while his mother, Moriah, looked on proudly.
Moews used the moment to reflect on the meaning of the badge itself. “The badge is a symbol of the authority entrusted to us and the responsibility that comes with it,” he said. “It represents our duty to serve and protect the public, to stay within that authority, and to earn the trust given to us by the community.”
He encouraged officers to stay visible, engaged, and committed to making a difference, balancing proactive policing with genuine community connection.
Nail expressed gratitude for the support he’s received since day one, saying it played a major role in his decision to serve in La Vergne.
Moews closed with a reminder that growth is a daily effort. “Try to be a better version of yourself today than you were yesterday,” he said. “Learn from mistakes and keep moving forward.”
The department continues to focus on recruiting, training, and developing officers dedicated to serving La Vergne with professionalism and heart.
