RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN - A day focused on joy, inclusion, and hands-on experiences brought together more than 1,100 students, teachers, and aides as the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office School Resource Officers (SROs) hosted their annual Fun Fair for Special Education (SPED) students... That was SRO Chad Dodson who coordinated this years event in Murfreesboro.
Held March 21st at Lane Agri-Park, the event welcomed students ages 3 to 22 who are enrolled in Rutherford County Schools’ special education programs. These students represent a wide range of abilities and needs, including autism, learning disabilities, and other health impairments that require specialized instruction and support.
Throughout the day, students enjoyed a variety of engaging activities... Some of the special guests that “wowed” kids this year included real-life kangaroos—giving some students the chance to pet them. SRO Dodson also highlighted...
Dodson credited Redstone Federal Credit Union for sponsoring the event and providing giveaways for students. He also expressed appreciation for the many community partners and volunteers who helped make the day possible.
Among the contributors, Party Animals Petting Zoo brought a variety of animals for students to feed and interact with, while Jumping Hearts Party Rentals provided games. Magician Chris Vaughter delivered a crowd-pleasing show, and employees from The Home Depot led craft activities.
Food and refreshments were also provided through community support. Chick-fil-A supplied lunches and brought its cow mascot, while Bethel Community Church delivered pizzas for volunteers.
Several public safety and state agencies participated, offering both fun and educational experiences. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency showcased its “Wildlife on Wheels” exhibit, while the Tennessee Highway Patrol distributed badges and giveaways. La Vergne Police Department provided coloring books and items for students, and Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services alongside Rutherford County Fire Rescue demonstrated emergency equipment.
Volunteers from the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Association and the Sheriff’s Community Engagement Unit helped facilitate the event, while SRO supervisors ensured additional security.
The Fun Fair highlights the broader mission of special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA), a federal law requiring public schools to identify and support students with disabilities through specialized instruction and related services. These services ensure eligible students receive a free and appropriate public education tailored to their needs.
Rutherford County Schools also provides additional support through Section 504 accommodations for students whose physical or mental impairments impact major life activities such as learning, mobility, or communication.
District officials previously noted that the Rutherford County Schools continue to perform at a high level academically, with a 97.2% graduation rate and more than 75% of schools earning an A or B on the state’s accountability report. Special education services also include early intervention programs such as Child Find screenings for children ages 3 to 5.
Officials encourage families who believe a child between the ages of 3 and 22 may need special education services to contact the Rutherford County Schools Special Education Department at (615) 893-5812.
