MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — City leaders will take a deeper look at the future of transportation and traffic management during a Joint Conceptual Workshop between the Murfreesboro City Council and Planning Commission this Wednesday, April 8, with a strong focus on the long-range 2050 Major Transportation Plan (MTP) and a practical session titled “Traffic 101.”
The workshop, scheduled for 4:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, is designed as a working session with no formal votes or public comment, allowing city officials and planners to engage in detailed discussions about growth, infrastructure, and mobility planning.
Long-Term Vision: 2050 Major Transportation Plan - A central focus of the meeting will be an update on the 2050 Major Transportation Plan, presented by city staff and consultants. The MTP serves as a strategic roadmap guiding Murfreesboro’s transportation network over the next several decades, helping city leaders anticipate and respond to rapid population growth and development pressures.
The plan outlines key priorities such as budgeting for future infrastructure, identifying partnership opportunities, and preserving mobility corridors across the city. It also builds on previous long-range plans, including efforts completed in 2003 and 2017, while incorporating updated data on current growth trends and development patterns.
Officials will also review the plan’s geographic scope, current progress, and next steps, ensuring that Murfreesboro remains proactive in addressing traffic congestion and transportation demands tied to one of Tennessee’s fastest-growing regions.
Understanding Growth: “Traffic 101” - In addition to long-range planning, the workshop will include a “Traffic 101” presentation aimed at explaining how the city evaluates the impact of new developments on roadways.
This session will break down the role of Traffic Impact Studies (TIS), which are engineering analyses used to determine how proposed developments affect traffic flow, safety, and infrastructure needs. These studies are a critical tool in day-to-day planning decisions, particularly when reviewing rezonings, site plans, and development proposals.
City staff will explain when traffic studies are required, how they are conducted, and what they measure—including turn lane needs, signal requirements, and potential failure points in the transportation network. The presentation will also highlight how mitigation measures are developed to address traffic concerns before they become larger issues.
Importantly, officials will emphasize how Traffic Impact Studies and the 2050 MTP work together: the MTP provides the long-term vision, while TIS ensures that individual developments align with that vision, supporting safe and efficient growth across the city.
Planning Ahead Without Formal Action - While no official decisions will be made during the workshop, the session provides an opportunity for city leaders to align on transportation priorities and better understand the tools guiding Murfreesboro’s future growth.
With continued expansion placing increased pressure on local infrastructure, discussions surrounding both long-term planning and immediate traffic management are expected to play a key role in shaping policy decisions in the months ahead.
