COFFEE COUNTY, TN — 30-Minutes East of Murfreesboro, authorities in Coffee County are warning residents about a scam notice that is being widely circulated through text messages, emails, and social media platforms, falsely claiming to be an official court enforcement document. But don't worry, there's nothing official about the document.
According to the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, the fraudulent notice is designed to appear as an official communication from a Tennessee court, complete with a case number, judge’s name, and references to traffic violations such as unpaid tolls or parking tickets. The document threatens serious consequences, including license suspension, court action, and damage to credit scores, in an attempt to pressure recipients into taking immediate action.
A key element of the scam is a QR code printed at the bottom of the notice, which instructs recipients to scan it to “settle your unpaid balance.” Authorities stress that this is a phishing tactic intended to steal personal and financial information.
Officials emphasize that legitimate government agencies do not request payments or sensitive information through unsolicited QR codes, text messages, or emails. Additionally, some versions of the notice contain inconsistencies—such as referencing violations in another state—which further indicate the document is not authentic.
Residents are strongly advised not to scan the QR code or respond to the message in any way. Anyone who receives this notice should delete it immediately. If you believe you may have already interacted with the scam or provided personal information, contact your local law enforcement agency as soon as possible.
The Coffee County Sheriff’s Office continues to monitor reports of the scam and encourages the public to remain vigilant as similar fraudulent schemes circulate across Middle Tennessee.
