Rutherford Races to Read Returns with Derby-Themed Fun to Support Literacy

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — A unique blend of derby flair, family fun, and a mission to promote literacy will return later this month as the 2nd Annual Rutherford Races to Read takes place on Saturday, April 25, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Oaklands Mansion.

The event, organized to benefit the Rutherford County Library Foundation, brings together community leaders, local businesses, and families for an afternoon centered on supporting literacy initiatives across the county.

Unlike a traditional horse race, participants will compete while wearing inflatable horse costumes in a board game-style competition. Movement along the track is determined by the roll of a giant dice, creating an interactive and unpredictable race designed to entertain attendees of all ages.

Organizers say the event builds on the success of its inaugural run in 2025, which raised more than $17,000 for literacy programs. This year, the goal is to increase that total to $20,000, funding expanded access to books, educational programming, and resources for families throughout Rutherford County.

“Events like Rutherford Races to Read allow our community to come together in a joyful and memorable way while directly supporting literacy programs that change lives,” said John Trail, Chair of the Rutherford County Library Foundation.

Guests are encouraged to embrace the derby theme by wearing festive attire, with prizes awarded for categories such as Best Hat and Best Dressed, including a children’s division. The family-friendly atmosphere is designed to make the event accessible and engaging for all ages.

Admission is set at $20 for adults and $10 for children, with a discounted family four-pack available for $50. Proceeds from the event will directly support the Rutherford County Library Foundation’s ongoing efforts to enhance library services and literacy programs beyond what public funding alone can provide.

The Rutherford County Library System currently operates six branches and a bookmobile, serving communities across the county with support from local municipalities and county funding.
