Murfreesboro May Avoid Tax Increase as Budget Planning for Next Fiscal Year Moves Forward

MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS NEWS) - In Murfreesboro, planning for the upcoming fiscal year is underway, and at this point, it appears the city may be able to avoid two small words that create very big emotions: “Tax Increase.” Mayor Shane McFarland told WGNS News this past week... That last tax increase went into effect during the 2019–2020 fiscal year.

Avoiding a tax increase is no small feat, as residents in nearby cities like Nashville have seen in years past. Locally, the mayor says that growth and strong sales tax collections have helped ward off those two words that often concern residents...

A lack of fraudulent activity and careful government spending has also helped the city avoid a tax increase... The remaining 20% of funding goes toward road projects, infrastructure needs, and schools...

The mayor went on to say that managing city spending plays a key role in determining whether residents face a larger or smaller tax burden, especially for those on fixed incomes... Again, as city officials continue to formulate budget plans for the next fiscal year, it appears those plans will not include a tax increase.

Some of the priorities currently in various phases include the continued widening of Medical Center Parkway to reduce traffic congestion, which has been an ongoing project; the extension of Cherry Lane and its future connection to both I-840 and I-24; a new park along Veterans Parkway that is expected to open in 2027; the daylighting of Town Creek near the downtown square; and the need for additional classroom space for city schools.

Looking at the private sector projects that will need Murfreesboro’s approval in 2027, plans are still in the works for a new Lowe’s home improvement store on Highway 231 South across from Murfreesboro Medical Clinic, a new Chick-fil-A at the intersection of South Church Street and Joe B. Jackson Parkway, along with additional prospective retail growth near The Avenue.

Also underway is the completion of the new Buc-ee’s gas station along I-24, as well as a future mixed-use development that will include residential, commercial, and retail space at the intersection of South Church Street and Broad Street; a stand-alone emergency room on Warrior Drive at South Church Street; and a new MMC location toward Lascassas, among other projects.

As the Murfreesboro City Council works through budget parameters, WGNS will keep listeners up to date on any proposed changes that may impact their wallets.
