RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN - A former Rutherford County school bus driver remains in custody as he awaits a summer court appearance following his arrest on a massive 41-count felony indictment. Troy Harden, 38, of Smyrna, faces a litany of charges involving the alleged sexual abuse of children, according to records from the Rutherford County Circuit Court.

The charges against Harden (mugshot is posted above this article) were formally filed after Grand Jury action on May 6, 2025, which came in the form of a sealed indictment. The indictment was the culmination of an intensive investigation led by Detective Marcy Gossett of the Smyrna Police Department with court documents showing the alleged offenses occurred in October 2023.  Those documents also confirm that Assistant District Attorney Sharon Reddick is representing the State, while Public Defender Russell "Rusty" Perkins is representing Harden.

At this point, the suspect is currently scheduled for a status hearing in approximately two months. These proceedings allow the judge, the state prosecutor, and the defense to review the progression of the case, ensure the discovery of evidence is complete, and discuss potential plea negotiations or trial scheduling.

The 41-count indictment includes the following charges:

  • 21 counts of Especially Aggravated Sexual Exploitation of a Minor

  • 1 count of Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Child

  • 5 counts of Sexual Battery by an Authority Figure

  • 10 counts of Statutory Rape by an Authority Figure

  • 2 counts of Rape of a Child

  • 2 counts of Aggravated Sexual Battery

James Evans, Chief Communications Officer for Rutherford County Schools, confirmed that Harden was previously employed by a third-party contractor to provide transportation services for the district.

"Troy Harden was a driver for one of our contractors last school year," Evans stated. "He has not driven any of our buses since that time."

School officials acted immediately upon learning of the allegations, removing Harden from his route and notifying parents of students who utilized his bus. Current reports indicate that none of the victims identified in the criminal case were students on Harden’s specific route.

The case highlights a sobering trend in state crime data. According to recent figures, juveniles between the ages of 14 and 17 are the most frequent victims of sexual assault in Tennessee, accounting for 23 percent of all reported cases. Victims aged 10 to 13 represent the second-highest demographic at 18 percent.

Regional data from the Department of Health suggests the Mid-Cumberland region - which encompasses Rutherford, Davidson, and 11 surrounding counties - accounts for 33 percent of all sexual assault reports statewide, the highest concentration in Tennessee.

Harden remains jailed at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center in Murfreesboro pending his next court date.
