PORTLAND-TN - Authorities in Portland, TN are investigating a tragic incident involving a fatal animal attack that occurred early Monday morning, April 20, 2026. The Portland Police Department confirmed that an infant has died following an encounter with a family dog.

On Monday, April 20, 2026, at approximately 7:00 a.m., officers responded to a residence within the city limits to investigate a reported death. Preliminary findings from the department indicate that a dog belonging to the family managed to gain access to the interior of the home through a rear door. Once inside, the animal attacked the child.

The infant succumbed to injuries sustained during the attack, according to police reports.

When officers arrived at the scene, they encountered the dog, which remained on the property and continued to exhibit aggressive behavior. For the safety of the family and first responders, the animal was euthanized by responding officers at the scene. Police have stated there is no ongoing threat to the public.
