MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Rutherford County is inviting residents and visitors to take part in a unique, history-driven experience as the nation approaches its 250th birthday. The Rutherford County Convention and Visitors Bureau, in partnership with Stones River National Battlefield and 18 additional community organizations, has launched the America’s 250 Scavenger Hunt Passport—a countywide initiative designed to highlight local history and celebrate America’s semiquincentennial.
The interactive passport encourages participants to explore historic sites, museums, and special events across Rutherford County while learning about the area’s role in the nation’s story. Using the booklet as a guide, individuals and families can visit participating locations and collect stamps or stickers along the way.
The passport was designed and produced with funding from the National Park Service. Beginning May 1, 2026, printed copies will be available while supplies last at several locations, including Stones River National Battlefield, the Rutherford County Convention and Visitors Bureau visitor center, Oaklands Mansion, Sam Davis Home, the Middle Tennessee State University Honors College, and the La Vergne Public Library. A downloadable version is also available online through the National Park Service website.
Participants who collect at least ten stamps or stickers can redeem their completed passports at the Rutherford County Convention and Visitors Bureau visitor center for a commemorative tote bag, available while supplies last.
Organizers say the program is meant to encourage community engagement while offering a fun and educational way to experience Rutherford County’s historical landmarks and cultural institutions. Additional events connected to America’s 250 celebration can be found at rutherford250events.com.
Participating sites and partners include the African American Heritage Society of Rutherford County, Bradley Academy, Cannonsburgh Village, The Center for the Arts, Children of the American Revolution – Stones River Society, the cities of La Vergne and Smyrna, Daughters of the American Revolution – Colonel Hardee Murfree Chapter, Discovery Center, Heritage Center of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County, Lytle Cemetery, Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Department, Oaklands Mansion, Rutherford Arts Alliance, Rutherford County Archives and Historic Courthouse Museum, Rutherford County Library System, Sam Davis Home, Sons of the American Revolution – Stones River Chapter, Stones River National Battlefield, and the Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area.
