MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) - Stones River National Battlefield is inviting the Rutherford County community to remember the fallen during a series of events from May 23rd-26th. The weekend kicks off Saturday, May 23rd, as scouts and youth groups gather to place flags on more than 7,000 headstones.
On Sunday, May 24th, the park will host its main Memorial Day ceremony at 1:30 p.m. at the cemetery rostrum. On the Memorial Day holiday, Monday, May 25th, park rangers will lead guided walks at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. to share the history of those buried on the grounds.
Staff will remain on duty through May 26th to assist visitors and answer questions about the site's history. They specifically ask visitors not to leave coins on headstones because the metal can damage the historic stone and create hazards for mowing crews.
