MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - The Salvation Army’s annual “Beyond the Bells” luncheon brought a full room together Thursday (5/14/2026) at The View at Fountains, offering a warm, heartfelt look at the work being done year‑round in Rutherford and Cannon Counties. The event is designed to take people beyond the familiar sound of Christmas kettles and into the everyday stories of hope, stability, and second chances that unfold quietly throughout the year.

“Beyond the Bells” is part celebration, part storytelling, and part reminder of how deeply local programs shape lives: supportive housing, pathway of hope, youth enrichment, and family services all take center stage and help neighbors move toward independence and stability.

One of the highlights each year is the presentation of the Beyond the Bells Honoree Award, recognizing a partner whose commitment goes far beyond financial support. This year’s honoree, Smyrna Ready Mix (SRM) embodies that spirit in a way few companies can match. Founded here in Rutherford County and now operating 560 locations across 24 states, SRM has woven service into its company culture from the ground up.
During the Christmas season, SRM employees across all 24 states take part in a coordinated bell ringing effort. From the home office in Smyrna, one person organizes a time when SRM teams from the Southeast to the Midwest to the Mountain states all ring Salvation Army bells at the same time. It’s a simple gesture, but a powerful one — a 24-state show of unity and compassion that reflects the heart of the company.

The luncheon also featured personal stories that remind the community why this work matters. One of those stories was from Alonso who shared how the Salvation Army taught him how to succeed and move from homeless to a father of responsibility. Then volunteers lovingly helped a single-mom, Kristen, learn life-skills that saved her family. Then a young teen woman, Javeah, stepped to the microphone and told how music camp helped her grow skills and confidence, shaping her into a more well‑rounded young person. The Murfreesboro Salvation Army is also building brass bands that will enhance worship experiences and give more young people a chance to learn, play, and belong.

Last year alone, the Salvation Army’s service to Rutherford and Cannon Counties touched 2,146 people. That included 8,275 nights of safe shelter, 10,514 meals, 1,379 children and seniors supported through the Angel Tree program, 255 spiritual connections, and 133 days of summer camp for local children at Camp Paradise Valley on Dale Hollow Lake. Each number represents a person, a family, or a moment of hope — and the “Beyond the Bells” luncheon at The View at Fountains on Medical Center Parkway made sure those stories were front and center.
