MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) - Hundreds of American flags will soon fly in Murfreesboro as the Healing Field returns for Memorial Day weekend.
The Freedom Trail Foundation is hosting the massive display at 265 West Thompson Lane. This year, organizers are tying the annual tribute into a celebration of America's 250th birthday.
Each flag on the field represents a unique hero, including veterans, active military personnel, and first responders. Visitors can walk through the rows of flags or explore the Freedom Trail display, which teaches the history of the American flag.
The event kicks off with an opening ceremony this Saturday (May 23rd), at 8:00 AM. Organizers will host formal flag retirement ceremonies on both Saturday and Sunday evenings at 6:00 PM. The tribute concludes with a closing ceremony on Memorial Day (Monday, May 25th), at 5:00 PM.
Local residents can participate directly by sponsoring a flag in honor of a loved one. All proceeds support the ongoing patriotic and community outreach programs of the Freedom Trail Foundation.
