MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) - A pillar of the Rutherford County sports community is calling it a career. Riverdale High School athletic director and head baseball coach Barry Messer is retiring after 27 years with the school. Messer leaves behind a legacy that includes hundreds of victories, multiple state tournament runs, and a lasting impact on thousands of local student-athletes.

During his tenure as head baseball coach, Messer compiled a 477-246 record. Under his leadership, the Warriors captured nine district championships, five region titles, and made five state tournament appearances. His influence also extended beyond the diamond. Messer served as an assistant coach for the girls' basketball team during their 2007 state championship run and took over as the school's athletic director in 2008.

Riverdale Principal Tamera Blair praised Messer's dedication to the school and its students. Blair noted that beyond the wins and the premier baseball facilities Messer helped build, his true impact rests in his mentorship and character. Messer also leaves behind an experienced coaching staff that will keep the Warrior baseball tradition moving forward.
