MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - United Way of South Central Tennessee (UWSCTN) is celebrating another successful tax season after helping return millions of dollars to local residents through its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

According to United Way officials, the VITA program generated an estimated $6.1 million in economic impact across the region during the 2026 tax season. The program also offered extended tax preparation opportunities this year through the Internal Revenue Service due to the effects of Winter Storm Fern.

The United Way VITA program is an IRS-supported tax preparation service that provides free tax filing assistance to qualifying individuals and families. Trained volunteers prepare tax returns at no cost, helping residents maximize refunds while avoiding filing fees.

During the most recent tax season, more than 80 volunteers contributed approximately 6,000 hours of service at nine VITA sites located throughout UWSCTN's service area.

The program completed 3,526 tax returns and saved taxpayers more than $1 million in filing fees. In addition, clients received a combined $5.1 million in tax refunds, resulting in a total financial impact of approximately $6.1 million in Bedford, Cannon, Coffee, Lincoln, Moore, Rutherford, and Warren counties.

“Through VITA, we have the privilege of turning tax season into an opportunity — one that helps hardworking families keep more of what they've earned and take meaningful steps toward financial security. With our community's support, we look forward to reaching even more people through this service next year,” said UWSCTN President and CEO Kristen Swann.

United Way officials are already seeking volunteers for the next tax season. Volunteer training is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2026.
