RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WGNS) - Rutherford County residents affected by January's severe ice storm have one week left to apply for federal disaster assistance. The final deadline to submit applications for both FEMA assistance and U.S. Small Business Administration disaster loans is Wednesday, June 10th.

FEMA cash is up for grabs for homeowners and renters, including college students, who face uninsured losses from the winter freeze. This money can cover temporary housing expenses, basic home repairs, and uninsured damage to personal property like vehicles. It can also help pay for storm-related medical, dental, or transportation bills. So far, FEMA has approved more than $57 million dollars in disaster aid for over 60-thousand households across Tennessee.

Locals can apply by visiting DisasterAssistance.gov, using the FEMA smartphone app, or calling 800-621-3362. If you want face-to-face help, you need to act even faster. All physical Disaster Recovery Centers will close for good at the end of the business day this Saturday (June 6th). You can find the nearest open center by texting "DRC" and your ZIP code to 43362. After next Wednesday's deadline, you can no longer start a new claim, but you can still submit paperwork or file appeals on existing files.

Next Wednesday is also the final deadline to apply for a low-interest disaster loan through the SBA. These loans are not just for businesses. Homeowners can apply for up to $500,000 dollars to repair or replace damaged real estate, while renters can apply for up to $100,000 dollars to replace lost personal property. Neighbors can apply online at SBA.gov/disaster or call 800-659-2955.
