SMYRNA, Tenn. (WGNS) - A local author and artist is proving that it is never too late to start a new chapter. Smyrna resident Maryanne VanDyke is celebrating the release of her two newest books, Hugs of Happiness and Hugs of Color. The 89-year-old creator will showcase her work during a special gallery exhibition and book launch at the Trellis and Vine Gallery in Smyrna.

The public can view the collection from June 17th through June 20th. The gallery will also host an artist reception and book release celebration on Friday, June 20th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

VanDyke previously found success with her Dog Tail Detective Series. For her latest projects, she combined her love of storytelling and visual art to create a whimsical collection featuring playful animals and uplifting illustrations. Hugs of Happiness showcases her original watercolor and gouache artwork, while Hugs of Color gives readers a chance to color the illustrations themselves.

VanDyke moved to Smyrna at age 80. She authored three mystery novels before diving into watercolor painting at age 88. Her personal motto is "Repot Your Life." She believes that growth, creativity, and new beginnings are possible at any stage of life. VanDyke says that attitude matters much more than age, and you cannot succeed if you do not try.

The upcoming exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. The Trellis and Vine Gallery is located at 27 South Lowry Street in Smyrna.
