RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WGNS News) - Interstate 840 eastbound near the Nashville Superspeedway in Rutherford County was temporarily closed Friday morning after a commercial truck hauling heavy construction equipment struck a bridge. The crash happened at State Route 452, where a tractor-trailer transporting a backhoe hit the bridge structure. The impact was serious enough for the Tennessee Department of Transportation to shut down the eastbound lanes while crews assessed the scene.
Erin Zeigler, Regional Communications Officer for TDOT Region 3 in Middle Tennessee, confirmed the closure involved the eastbound side of I-840 near the speedway. Following the collision, TDOT’s bridge inspection team was called to visually examine the structure for possible damage.
Transportation officials wanted to determine whether the bridge remained safe for vehicles traveling both across the overpass and underneath it. The inspection was required before traffic could resume through the area. By 10:30 a.m. Friday, the crash scene had been cleared and TDOT confirmed that all lanes were reopened.
