MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - Main Street Murfreesboro has long been the guardian of the city’s historic downtown district, a place layered with stories stretching from its days as the former State Capital to the scars left by the Civil War, tornadoes, and the rumble of the old Dixie Highway. That sense of place—of walking through the Heart of Tennessee’s past—is exactly what Main Street aims to preserve through events that bring people together and celebrate the community’s shared heritage.
This weekend, that tradition of connection takes on a new rhythm. Main Street Murfreesboro is inviting residents and visitors to experience the beauty, movement, and meaning of Aztec dance during two free performances by Danza Azteca Quetzalli (“Beautiful Feather”). The group will take the stage at the Murfreesboro Saturday Market on Saturday, June 20, beginning at 10:00 a.m. The performances will unfold on the grassy lot across from the Rutherford County Courthouse at the corner of East Main Street and Church Street, and the event is open to all.
Danza Azteca Quetzalli, based here in Middle Tennessee, is dedicated to preserving and sharing Indigenous cultural heritage through traditional danza. Their performances are more than art—they’re a living expression of history, spirituality, and community. Through cultural presentations and outreach, the group works to build understanding, foster intergenerational connection, and create opportunities for families and community members to learn about Indigenous traditions with pride and respect.
Murfreesboro Saturday Market Manager Linda Weeks said, “One of the goals of the Murfreesboro Saturday Market is to create experiences that bring people together while celebrating the diversity of our community, and welcoming Danza Azteca Quetzalli downtown offers visitors a chance to experience an important cultural tradition in a setting that already feels like the city’s front porch."
The Saturday Market has become a beloved gathering place, known for connecting shoppers with local farmers, artisans, and small businesses. Beyond the fresh produce and handmade goods, the market has increasingly become a hub for free arts and cultural programming throughout the season. These experiences help shape a vibrant downtown atmosphere while highlighting the many cultures that contribute to Murfreesboro’s character.
Community members are encouraged to arrive early, enjoy the market, and gather for the performance beginning at 10:00 a.m. It’s another chance to celebrate the past, present, and future of a downtown that continues to bring people together in meaningful ways.
