Additional Updates: MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS News) — On Tuesday (06/16/2026), WGNS reported on a multi-agency police pursuit that began after a Murfreesboro Police officer responded to a call about a possible credit card skimmer being placed on, or removed from, a gas pump. The call sent MPD to Highway 231 South near Joe B. Jackson Parkway just after 9:00 Tuesday morning.
When the officer arrived at the RaceTrac gas station, located across the street from the South Church Street office of Murfreesboro Medical Clinic, police learned that a man seen possibly removing a credit card skimmer from a gas pump had already left the area in a full-size black SUV.
Fortunately, it did not take long for the officer to locate the late-model Chevrolet Tahoe, because the driver had not gone far. According to reports, the SUV traveled about 850 feet up the hill from the convenience store and into the new Tiger Hill townhome community.
Police spotted the SUV in front of a residence. The vehicle likely stood out even more because the neighborhood’s HOA rules do not allow parking on the street or sidewalk. Adding to the situation, the small subdivision has only one way in and one way out, meaning the driver would have to pass the incoming police vehicle to leave the neighborhood.
After the officer entered the community, the SUV reportedly turned around, prompting the officer to do the same in order to get behind the vehicle. Ring doorbell cameras may have captured footage that showed the SUV briefly stopped when the officer initiated a traffic stop, but the stop did not last long.
The officer exited the patrol car and walked up to the driver’s side window of the SUV. However, police said the driver, identified as Yunior Herrera Gonzalez (mugshot above article), hit the gas and sped away, “...striking the officer with a side mirror of the SUV.”
Thankfully, the officer was not injured and was able to radio dispatch that the 26-year-old suspect had fled the scene of the traffic stop.
From Tiger Hill, the fleeing vehicle made its way onto Joe B. Jackson Parkway and then to I-24. Police pursued the SUV for about 15 to 20 miles before the Sarasota, Florida man finally came to a stop in the middle of multiple police vehicles.
Murfreesboro Police said the pursuit ended on Burnt Knob Road, not far from the I-840 and Veterans Parkway interchange. In addition to MPD officers, deputies with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office helped bring the situation to an end. The Tennessee Highway Patrol also confirmed to WGNS that troopers assisted in the pursuit.
MPD officers charged Gonzalez with aggravated assault, two counts of evading arrest, three counts of reckless endangerment, reckless driving, simple drug possession, and driving on a suspended license.
The investigation involving the alleged illegal credit card skimmer remains ongoing.
