MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office is inviting residents to take part in a meaningful way to honor military members, first responders, or loved ones by purchasing an engraved brick for the 9/11 Memorial located at 940 New Salem Highway. The memorial, already one of the most symbolic and heartfelt sites in Middle Tennessee, offers families a chance to create a lasting tribute in a place dedicated to sacrifice, service, and remembrance.

The engraved bricks pay tribute to the first responders who lost their lives when terrorists crashed four jets on September 11, 2001, striking the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. But the memorial has grown beyond that original purpose. Today, families can also honor military members, emergency responders, or anyone special they want remembered in a place rooted deeply in community support.

The brick program was launched by the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Association as a way for people to remember their own heroes—whether they served in uniform, worked in civil service, or simply made a lasting impact on their family. Each brick becomes part of the walkway surrounding the memorial, creating a powerful tapestry of names and stories.

The memorial itself was dedicated on September 11, 2011, marking the tenth anniversary of the attacks. Built entirely through local support, it features a 3,000‑pound steel I‑beam recovered from the North Tower of the World Trade Center. The beam is positioned to point directly toward New York City, forming a symbolic connection between Rutherford County and Ground Zero. It stands as a reminder of the 2,977 lives lost and the more than 6,000 injured, as well as the unity that followed.

Brick pavers are available in two sizes—4×8 for $50 and 8×8 for $100. They can be installed at the memorial or kept for personal use. Once ordered, families will be notified when their brick is placed or ready for pickup.
