MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - A local pharmacist known for his leadership, community spirit, and decades of service is receiving one of the highest honors in his profession. Dr. Rick Sain, PharmD, FTPA has been named the 2026 recipient of the Tennessee Pharmacists Association’s Bowl of Hygeia Award — a recognition reserved for pharmacists whose civic and community contributions go far beyond the counter.
Sain has spent his entire career blending professional excellence with a deep commitment to the people of Rutherford County. His leadership, compassion, and steady presence have shaped not only the local pharmacy landscape but countless community organizations as well.
The award will be presented to Rick during the Tennessee Pharmacists Association’s Annual Awards Banquet, held July 9–11 in Florence, Alabama.
The Bowl of Hygeia is one of the most respected awards in pharmacy nationwide. Its emblem — the ancient Greek symbol of Hygeia’s bowl and serpent — represents wisdom, healing, and service. Recipients are chosen not just for their work in the profession, but for the ways they strengthen their communities through volunteerism, civic leadership, and public health advocacy.
Sain’s story is rooted in small‑town beginnings. Born and raised in Bell Buckle, he grew up on his family’s farm, where he learned the work ethic that would carry him through a 36‑year career. His interest in pharmacy sparked during his senior year of high school while working at a local Revco. After completing undergraduate studies at Middle Tennessee State University, he earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in 1989.
He interned at the former Reeves‑Powell Drug Store on Church Street and was hired after graduation. Just five years later, in 1994, he became co‑owner of Reeves‑Sain alongside fellow pharmacist Shane Reeves. Together, they built the business into one of Tennessee’s most respected independent pharmacies, known for its personalized care, innovative services, and the iconic Soda Shoppe that became a community gathering place.
Sain’s professional accolades are extensive — Rutherford County Business Person of the Year, Tennessee Distinguished Young Pharmacist, and Rutherford County Pharmacist of the Year among them. His leadership roles span the Tennessee Pharmacists Association, Murfreesboro Breakfast Rotary Club, and the UT College of Pharmacy Alumni Association. He continues to serve on the boards of the Community Foundation of Rutherford County and the Discovery Center.
Rick and his wife, Amy, have called Murfreesboro home since 1990 and raised two sons, Alec and Ky.
Congratulations to Dr. Rick Sain on this well‑deserved honor and on a career defined by service, integrity, and community.
