Council incumbents Madelyn Scales Harris and Doug Young are running again while Councilman Toby Gilley is stepping down to run for General Sessions Judge Part Three. Nancy Rainier and Collier Smith are seeking re-election to the Murfreesboro City School Board. Chair Mary Wade announced in January she would not seek re-election, after serving 16-years. Wesley Ballard, Kevin Fisher, Geoffrey Herring, Phil King and Novonda Lilly are also on the ballot as candidates for school board.

Murfreesboro voters will also choose yes or no on a referendum to change the date of municipal elections to coincide with the date of the August general elections. If approved by voters, the change would take place beginning August 2016 with the next Murfreesboro elections.
