The Red Cross has issued an emergency appeal for blood, especially type O.

In a mass e-mail, the Red Cross noted, "Right now, the Red Cross has a limited supply of most blood types, and blood is being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in. To continue treating patients in need, we urge all eligible donors to come in to give blood this week."

Population percentages based on blood types:

• O-positive: 38 percent of Americans have this type
• O-negative: 7 percent of Americans have this type
• A-positive: 34 percent of Americans have this type
• A-negative: 6 percent of Americans have this type
• B-positive: 9 percent of Americans have this type
• B-negative: 2 percent of Americans have this type
• AB-positive: 3 percent of Americans have this type
• AB-negative: 1 percent of Americans have this type
