(SMYRNA) The Smyrna/Rutherford County Airport Authority and Atkins North America continue to update the Airport's Master Plan.

The Authority's Executive Director John Black said, "The final comprehensive Airport Master Plan will be a living planning document that describes the short, medium, and long-term development plans necessary to meet the anticipated future demand of the airport and community. This next phase of the project is to discuss alternative development options for the airfield and available properties within the airport boundaries. Your voice will help in shaping the future of the Smyrna Airport long into the future."

The Airport Authority's Technical and Community Advisory Committee will next meet on January 23, 2020.

3rd Largest Airport In TN

Many persons do not realize that the Smyrna Airport is the third largest in Tennessee and this state's busiest general aviation airport. Only Nashville International and Memphis are larger.

One of the runways is 8,048 feet long and 150 feet wide, while the other is 5,546 feet long and 100-feet wide. It can accommodate most aircraft from large commercial jets to huge military cargo jets. In addition, the Smyrna facility has a helipad.

The Smyrna Airport also continues to support Tennessee Air National Guard's C-17 Globemaster III training operations. In fact, the Guard leases a large section of the facilities 1,700 total acres to maintain the Grubbs/Kyle Training Center. There are 1,270 Army National Guard personnel representing 24 units who are assigned to Smyrna. 162 of those personnel are full-time.
