Rutherford County schools hosting various Veteran's Day events

Several Rutherford County schools are hosting activities to honor our veterans for Veteran's Day. The following is a list of those activities.

  • Blackman Middle - Guest Speaker, band and choir will perform: Seventh grade at 9:30 a.m., eighth grade at 10:19 a.m. and sixth grade at 11:15 a.m.
  • Cedar Grove Elementary - Assembly in gym at 8 a.m. to honor student's family members who are veterans. LaVergne High Color Guard to present colors, National Anthem performed by first grade; Cedar Grove choir and band will perform
  • Smyrna Primary, Smyrna Middle and Smyrna High schools - 15th Annual Veterans Day Program at 12:45 p.m., collaboration with Smyrna Middle's band and choir and Smyrna High's JROTC. Note: Event will be held at Smyrna Middle's auditorium
  • Whitworth-Buchanan Middle School - program will be Nov. 14 at 1:15 p.m.; Veterans from community are invited
  • David Youree Elementary - Programs begins at 8 a.m. Smyrna High's JROTC will present flags, will honor School Board member Jim Estes, a Vietnam veteran
  • Wilson Elementary - No assembly, taking donations for articles soldiers can use
  • Thurman Francis Arts Academy - Program begins at 9 a.m.
  • Central Magnet - Theatre class performing Veteran's Day selections for the student body at 1 p.m.
  • Blackman High - Concert choir, women's choral and select chorus performing in auditorium at 1:55 p.m.; free, please wear red, white, blue or service uniform
  • Oakland High - Choral program presenting "Honoring our Veterans," at 11 a.m. in gym; program consists of music, patriotic readings and brief history on our national anthem
  • Lascassas Elementary - Oakland High JROTC, Lascassas choir and guest, reading of the Star Spangled Banner, Gettysburg address & Declaration of Independence, video honoring veterans, guest speaker Michael Zietz
  • LaVergne Lake Elementary - "Hats off to Veterans" day, $1 donation to the G.I. Go fund, students may wear favorite hat, staff may wear jeans ("Jeans for Troops") for $5 donation
  • McFadden School of Excellence - Veterans and current military who are family of students are invited, greeted by National Honor Society and given a "thankful bag," guest will be taken to classrooms to share stories and answer questions, yellow ribbons will be tied on front schoolyard fence with names on each in honor or in memory of military friends and/or family
  • Rockvale Middle - Guest speaker: Sgt. 1st Class Charles D. Rorabough (U.S. Army retired), former Green Beret, Paratrooper and Infantry, did full tour in Vietnam and served 20 years in various duty stations
  • LaVergne High - Program in auditorium from 10:30-11 a.m., guest speaker Major Thornhill, former LHS student and JROTC Cadet Battalion Commander of LHS Wolverine Battalion, she is presently assigned to Tennessee Army National Guard
