MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - A new chapter in this county’s America 250 celebration is about to unfold, and it comes framed in light, landscape, and history. The Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce & Convention and Visitors Bureau, together with the Rutherford Arts Alliance, and Friends of Stones River National Battlefield, will unveil Hallowed Ground: Reflections on Stones River National Battlefield, a temporary photography exhibition showcasing the work of local photographer and longtime battlefield volunteer Jane Powell.
Running July through November 30, 2026, the exhibition invites visitors to slow down, look closely, and reflect on the complicated legacy of Stones River National Battlefield. Powell’s photographs capture the quiet beauty of the landscape while reminding viewers of the people and events that shaped the nation during one of the Civil War’s most pivotal battles. Organizers say the exhibit is designed not only to honor the past, but also to highlight the importance of preserving Rutherford County’s historic resources for future generations.
A New Lens on a Familiar Landscape
Ivy Albright, Cultural and Heritage Tourism Director for the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce & Convention and Visitors Bureau, says the exhibit is a meaningful addition to the county’s America 250 programming. “As we commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, this exhibit offers a powerful way to connect with Rutherford County’s unique role in our nation’s story,” Albright said. “Through Jane Powell’s photography and the collaboration of our cultural heritage partners, we’re able to honor our shared history while inspiring residents and visitors to experience one of Tennessee’s most significant historic sites.”
Powell, a Certified Tennessee State Naturalist, has spent years documenting the battlefield and National Cemetery, drawing inspiration from their natural beauty and solemn significance. Her passion for preservation and environmental education shines through in each image, offering viewers a chance to experience history in a more personal, contemplative way. Hallowed Ground marks the first exhibition of its kind hosted by the Chamber--bringing together arts, tourism, and preservation partners in a shared effort to celebrate the county’s nationally significant landscapes.
