The Rutherford County Sheriffs Office has released more about the dead man found Saturday near the Manchester Highway. He has been identified as 64-year old Troy Wheeler of Snell Road.

However, his death does not fit what most residents thought after hearing earlier reports from the sheriff. CLICK FOR ORIGINAL REPORT

Detective Steve Craig attended the autopsy on Monday (3/9/2015) where the state Medical Examiner's Office found the man's death was consistent with falling off a bridge, being knocked unconscious and possibly drowning on Saturday (3/7/2015) off U.S. Highway 41 (Manchester Pike).

Several people called Detective Craig to report they saw Wheeler walking in the area, standing at the bridge and seeing his roommate searching for him Saturday afternoon. His roommate found the body near a bridge.

During the investigation, Detective Craig learned Wheeler frequently walked to Gordon's Market from his home.

Detective Craig commented, "I thank everyone for calling in with information. It helped establish a time line."

Major Bill Sharp of the Criminal Investigations Division said Detective Craig interviewed numerous people and received numerous calls.

Major Sharp reaffirmed, "We want to reassure residents they are safe."

The investigation is still ongoing while awaiting the final results from the state Medical Examiner's Office.
