For those who may not be familiar with the unscrupulous act, the mastermind behind the scam often looks for inexperienced cashiers. Once the mark is found, they flawlessly work to confuse the clerk by asking for different sums of money back, sometimes using large bills. He said detectives suspect the quick-change scam involved two conmen who only spent $300, yet received $1,000 worth of gift cards. In other words, the men got-away with $700, according to police.
