UPDATE: Christiana Man Charged with Murder Has Case Bound Over to Grand Jury

A Christiana man charged with the murder of his neighbor has his case bound over to the Rutherford County Grand Jury.

54-Year-old Jeffery Hayden Burris of Panther Creek Road is accused of shooting and killing his neighbor,  58-year-old Clarence Rowden III.

Rutherford County District Attorney General Jennings Jones says witnesses at the scene identified Burris as the shooter and once located, he was found to be in possession of a firearm:Investigators report Rowden's wife called 911 July 6th of last year after Burris allegedly fired multiple rounds with a handgun, striking and killing Rowden.


 

PREVIOUSLY REPORTED: As of Friday evening (07/08/22), the man arrested for a murder that occured this past Wednesday in Christiana, Tennessee remains behind bars. 54-Year-old Jeffery Hayden Burris of Panther Creek Road is accused of shooting and killing his neighbor. Burris was charged with first-degree murder after the investigation into the shooting occured, according to Rutherford County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Capt. Todd Sparks.

Burris was charged in the shooting death of his next door neighbor 58-year-old Clarence Rowden III, Sparks said. The shooting occurred outside the victim’s home.

“The victim’s wife called 911 after Burris fired multiple rounds with a handgun, striking and killing Rowden,” Sparks said.

Rutherford County Sheriff’s deputies and Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services paramedics responded to the residence and attempted life-saving efforts, however, Rowden was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Burris was still at the scene and was detained immediately by responding patrol officers. Burris was later interviewed and charged by Detective Kyle Norrod.

“Our investigation has determined that Burris is believed to be the only suspect involved in this shooting,” Sparks said. “We are still following up to determine an exact motive.” 

Sheriff’s detectives and crime scene investigators collected evidence from the scene.

Burris is being held on a $600,000 bond with an initial court date being set Sept. 14.
