WGNS received a handful of phone calls asking about a news story involving a suspect being arrested during a TBI child rape investigation. Evidently, several callers found the story on different media websites and wanted to learn more details about the case, thinking the arrest took place in Rutherford County, Tennessee. However, the case did not evolve in our community, but instead in a small West Tennessee town called Rutherford.
The Town of Rutherford is in Gibson County, Tennessee and sits about 3-hours west of Rutherford County, Tennessee.
In the community of Rutherford, Tennessee, an investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation led to the arrest of 41-year-old Carroll Simon Butler. TBI special agents joined the Rutherford Police Department and Department of Children’s Services in investigating allegations of sexual assault against a child. During the investigation, agents discovered between 2008 and 2022, Butler allegedly sexually assaulted young female family members in the Town of Rutherford.
On March 29th, with the assistance of the West Tennessee Drug Task Force and the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office, TBI special agents arrested Butler on one count of Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Child, two counts of Rape of a Child, and two counts of Incest. He was booked into the Gibson County Jail on $500,000. As of Thursday (March 30, 2023), Butler remains behind bars.
