Middle Point Landfill's General Manager Mike Classen answers questions from the public::

  • Biggest concern is "smell", and Classen says 98% of their energy has focused on that issue to eliminate the problem.
  • Natural gas conversion from landfill to ATMOS Energy. Middle Point has invested $11-million in this project.
  • Presentation to last month's Rutherford County Commission's Public Works Committee
  • Educate public on recycling.
  • $125,000 for a new STEAM classroom at Walter Hill School.
  • Recycle food waste and create compost. He said that Republic would give the compost to gardeners for free!
  • Use the land between West Jefferson Pike and the landfill to construct recycling plants.
  • Results from several open houses throughout county.
  • Comments from Earth Day on Murfreesboro square include similar needs brought out at the open houses.
  • Republic Services has agreed to dramatically reduce waste from other counties, with the bulk of that being Davidson County. He noted, "This is an investment in Rutherford County".
  • Classen said, "Based on current useage, the landfill should be full within 4 1/2 to 5-years."
