MURFREESBORO, TN - UPDATE: On March 9, 2024, Murfreesboro Police responded to a home on East Vine Street, where they found Davion Gates lying unresponsive in the driveway. The 23-year-old had been shot multiple times and succumbed to his injuries. Shortly after the shooting, MPD Detective Justin Fugate was assigned as the lead investigator in the case, which is now gaining momentum in the local courts..

One of the many details uncovered at the start of the investigation… That was Rutherford County Assistant District Attorney Trevor Lynch. It was also learned that another man had a special interest in the home and those who lived there… Detectives interviewed and arrested Corey Munsell Lillard, Sr., who was charged with first degree murder.

Part of the evidence collected in the case was a recorded phone call… In addition to the first-degree murder charge, the 45-year-old suspect is facing drug-related charges, including possession of drug paraphernalia. Additionally, he has six counts of illegally possessing a weapon after previous drug convictions, two counts of possession of a handgun as a convicted felon, and two counts for employing and intending to go armed with a firearm.

Lillard was scheduled to appear in court later this month for a hearing, but that date was rescheduled and a status hearing will be before Circuit Court Judge James Turner on June 6, 2025.
