MONDAY NIGHT UPDATE: Murfreesboro, TN – Here’s an update on Tavarious Chambers, the suspect charged by Murfreesboro Police with six counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of tampering with evidence. When the shooting occurred this past Saturday night, Chambers had only been free on bond for four weeks and six days, due to previously filed charges.

In August, Chambers was arrested for Aggravated Domestic Assault (T.C.A. 39-13-102). That case began with a criminal investigation on August 7, and led to his arrest one day later. On August 11, he posted a $3,000 bond and was scheduled to appear before a judge on September 25, 2025.

Just 34 days after his arrest on the domestic violence charge, Chambers was taken into custody again—this time in connection with the attempted murder case that unfolded over the weekend. On Sunday, he was charged with six counts of attempted first-degree murder and is scheduled to appear in court on October 29, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. Detectives with the Murfreesboro Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit arrested Chambers less than 24 hours after he allegedly opened fire into a crowd of people attending a reunion at a pavilion in Old Fort Park, located off Old Fort Parkway near the New Salem Highway intersection.

Once police identified Chambers as the shooter, he was located shortly afterward and taken into custody at an apartment complex on Hazelwood Drive in Murfreesboro, which is also listed as his primary address. After questioning, he was booked into the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center around 6:15 a.m. Sunday morning (09/14/2025).

According to the preliminary investigation, the reunion was ending when Chambers arrived at the pavilion dressed in black and wearing a ski mask. He then began firing multiple rounds in the direction of four adults and two small children, according to an MPD report. Two people were struck by gunfire, and one victim returned fire in self-defense.

Emergency crews treated a woman at the scene for a gunshot wound to the leg. Rutherford County EMS later transported her to a hospital, where she remains in stable condition. A man who was shot in the torso was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle and underwent surgery; he is in critical condition.

Detectives have not said whether the shooting this past Saturday night was connected to the domestic violence charge filed against Chambers in August, nor have they released details about a possible motive. However, an MPD media release stated, "Police believed this was a targeted shooting and not random." Police also confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing.

Authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward and contact Detective Stalnaker at 629-201-5615.

Where the Case Stands - As of Monday night at 9:00 p.m., Tavarious Chambers remains jailed at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center under a $1 million bond. He is scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court on October 29, 2025, for his initial hearing in the attempted murder case. However, before that court date, Chambers is scheduled to stand before Judge Ben Hall McFarlin III later this month regarding the domestic violence case reported in August.

In Tennessee, attempted murder charges typically begin in General Sessions Court but advance to Circuit Court. At the preliminary stage, the judge determines whether there is probable cause that a felony was committed. If so, the case is bound over to the grand jury.

The grand jury, made up of 13 randomly selected citizens, reviews evidence presented by the prosecutor to decide if the case is strong enough to issue an indictment. If an indictment is returned, the case proceeds to Circuit Court for arraignment and trial. If the grand jury does not indict, the case is dismissed. Similarly, if the General Sessions judge does not find probable cause at the preliminary hearing, the case can be dismissed at that level.
