Murfreesboro, TN - WGNS has been a witness to Murfreesboro’s transformation for more than 79 years, and the pace of change shows no signs of slowing. With the city’s population now hovering around 173,625, it’s no surprise that traffic congestion has become a daily reality. Add to that a wave of ongoing construction projects, and navigating the city can feel like a challenge in itself.

Construction Zones and Commuter Impact

From now through September 27, 2025, several key areas in Murfreesboro are expected to experience traffic disruptions due to construction. As your Good Neighbor Station (GNS), we’re committed to keeping you informed with a detailed look at where and when these challenges may arise.

And for those wondering about the rest of Rutherford County—yes, they’re part of the story too. With a 2025 population of 388,909, many county residents regularly drive into Murfreesboro for shopping, work, and services. That means construction-related slowdowns affect not just city dwellers, but the entire region.

City Road Projects for September 21 - September 27
              
S Rutherford Blvd between Lascassas Pike and Billy Blvd   Contractor for the city's adaptive signal project will be performing boring. Expect intermittent work zones and lane closures.
 
Medical Center Parkway   Contractors for the city are widening Medical Center Parkway. Expect intermittent lane closures and new traffic patterns. Work is currently affecting both direction of travel lanes in the area of Thompson Lane. Use Gateway Blvd, Robert Rose Dr, and Wilkinson Pike as alternate routes.
 
Joe B Jackson Pkwy at WB I-24 On-Ramp Improvement Work   Expected Lane Closure:  Monday, 4/21 through Monday, 9/8:  Contractor for a private development will be making I-24 ramp improvements.  EB and/or WB traffic on Joe B Jackson will be reduced from two lanes to one lane.  Appropriate traffic controls will be in place.
 
Manson Pike/Burnt Knob Rd and Blackman Rd Intersection Improvement Work   Expected Lane Closure:  Monday through Friday:  BE ALERT FOR NEW TRAFFIC PATTERNS AND SIGNAL LAYOUT. City Contractor will be performing roadway widening work at the intersection.  There will be lane shifts and traffic interruptions. 
  
Town Creek Project   Hickerson Dr, W Castle St, and S Front St to experience intermittent lane closures.
 
City-Wide Google Fiber Installation Work

Expected Lane Closure:  Monday through Saturday, 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM:  Contractor for Google Fiber will be installing fiber optic lines.  There will be lane closures and lane shifts.  Appropriate traffic controls will be in place. 
  
Annual City Street Paving, Roadway, and Miscellaneous Work
 
Expected Lane Closures:  Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM:  City contractor will be performing construction work at the following streets:
  1. Medical Center parkway between Robert Rose Dr and Thompson Ln
  2. Manson Pike/Burnt Knob Rd and Blackman Rd (intersection improvement work)
  3. S Rutherford Blvd between Bradyville Pike and Manchester Pike (rooved pavement, milling and other roadwork)
  4. 3200 block of Bilbrey (drainage improvements)
  5. Greenland Dr between Old Lascassas Rd and Champion Way (striping)
  6. Fortress Blvd & Pucket Creek/Blaze Dr, Pucket Creek roundabout (crosswalk restriping)
Expect lane shifts and traffic interruptions.  Appropriate traffic controls will be in place.

RUTHERFORD COUNTY I-24
The I-24 ramp improvements at US 231 (SR 10/South Church Street/Exit 81) in Murfreesboro.
  • Nightly, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m., There will be alternating single lane closures eastbound and alternating double lane closures westbound on I-24 for installation of traffic control for media barrier work (MM 81).

RUTHERFORD COUNTY I-840
Resurfacing I-840 from Jefferson Pike (SR 266) to Wilson County Line.
  • Nightly, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m., There will be alternating lane closures on I-840 in both directions for final pavement marking and work on shoulders and roadway (MM 61 – 66).
