NASHVILLE, Tenn.  - A 22-year-old man from Smyrna is behind bars after allegedly fleeing from police and nearly striking officers during an overnight traffic stop that ended in a crash on Interstate 40.

According to authorities, South Precinct patrol officers initially stopped an Infiniti on Murfreesboro Pike near Expressway Park Drive after observing a traffic violation on Lafayette Street. During the stop, officers reported seeing and smelling marijuana coming from the vehicle.

Police asked the driver, identified as Jabbar Williams, along with two passengers, to exit the vehicle. Instead, Williams allegedly sped away, nearly hitting officers as he fled toward the interstate.

Authorities say Williams continued eastbound on I-40 for approximately half a mile, reaching speeds near 80 miles per hour before crashing into the median wall. Following the crash, he exited the vehicle and ran into oncoming traffic before being taken into custody.

The two passengers remained inside the vehicle and were not reported injured.

During the arrest, officers recovered marijuana from the scene.

Williams now faces multiple charges, including assault on an officer, felony and misdemeanor evading arrest, marijuana possession, leaving the scene of an accident, as well as misdemeanor charges for speeding and a stop sign violation.

He remains jailed on a $47,000 bond.
