Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee Calls Special Session to Review Congressional Map

TENNESSEE - On Friday, Governor Bill Lee announced that he will convene a special session of the Tennessee General Assembly to review the state’s current congressional district map amid renewed national scrutiny over representation and redistricting practices.

The special session is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, May 5, and will focus on evaluating whether Tennessee’s existing congressional boundaries continue to meet legal standards and reflect the will of voters across the state.

“We owe it to Tennesseans to ensure our congressional districts accurately reflect the will of Tennessee voters,” Lee said in a statement. “After consultation with the Lt. Governor, Speaker of the House, Attorney General, and Secretary of State, I believe the General Assembly has a responsibility to review the map and ensure it remains fair, legal, and defensible.”

The governor emphasized the urgency of the session, noting that any potential changes to the congressional map must be finalized quickly in order to meet mandatory election qualifying deadlines. Lawmakers will face a narrow window to debate, amend, and potentially pass updated district lines before upcoming election processes begin.

Redistricting has remained a contentious issue nationwide, with ongoing debates centered around fairness, legal compliance, and partisan balance. Tennessee’s move to revisit its map comes as several states face legal challenges and increased public attention over how district lines are drawn.

State legislative leaders are expected to outline procedural details for the session in the coming days, including committee assignments and opportunities for public input. Any proposed changes would require approval by both legislative chambers before being signed into law by the governor.

The outcome of the special session could have significant implications for Tennessee’s political landscape, shaping congressional representation ahead of future elections.

Senate Republicans release statements showing strong support of the redistricting special session: Tennessee Senate Republican leaders are praising Gov. Bill Lee’s call to bring the legislature back to Nashville next week to draw a new congressional map, helping solidify a Republican majority in Congress to advance President Trump’s agenda.

Lt. Governor Randy McNally (R-Oak Ridge): “We are in a historic moment that demands bold action. Tennessee now has the opportunity to send another Republican voice to Washington. We intend to seize it. The legislature will draw a fair and legal map free from outside influence. This election will shape the future of our country. Democrats in Washington have made clear their goal is to stop President Trump’s agenda and pursue impeachment. Tennessee Republicans will not stand by while the radical left pushes policies that weaken our borders, undermine public safety, and move our nation in the wrong direction. Tennessee needs strong conservatives in Congress who will put America first, secure the border, and protect our values. I thank Governor Lee for making this call. It is the right decision for Tennessee and for the nation.”

Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson (R-Franklin): “Tennesseans have made it clear they want strong borders, a strong economy, and common-sense leadership – not the failed policies coming from Washington Democrats. We have been presented with a critical opportunity to send another Tennessee Republican to Washington who will support President Trump and prevent radical democrat Hakeem Jefferies from becoming the next speaker. We’re not going to let that opportunity slip. I appreciate the governor for acting quickly and decisively so we can work together to deliver on our promises to Tennesseans.”

Senate Republican Caucus Chairman Ken Yager (R-Kingston): “We are stepping up to the plate to ensure Tennessee values have a stronger voice in Washington. By strengthening our congressional map, we can help secure a bigger Republican majority that will stand with President Trump, restore law and order, and fight back against the Democrats’ out-of-touch, far-left agenda. I thank Governor Lee for his strong leadership calling us back into session to push a stronger Republican agenda nationwide.”

Senate Pro Tempore Ferrell Haile (R-Gallatin): “Tennessee has a chance to strengthen its voice in Washington at a critical time for our country. The people of this state want leaders who will defend conservative values, support economic growth, secure the border, and stand up for Tennessee families. Tennessee is a conservative state that should have conservative voices. Governor Lee has demonstrated strong leadership in making this call so voters can have the opportunity to choose strong representation for our state’s future.”
