RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN - A Rutherford County resident received a voice mail on her cellphone with a 615-area code number from someone posing as Sheriff’s Sgt. Robert Horne. The caller left a message saying they were with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office and needed to discuss legal matters. They closed by leaving the potential victim a return phone number.

According to the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office, Sgt. Horne does not call residents to discuss legal matters.

The would-be victim called the number back, but realized it was not a Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office number. It was at that point the resident protected herself by calling the Sheriff’s Office to report the scam.

If you receive a similar call, you may call the Sheriff’s dispatch number at 615-898-7770 to verify if the call is legitimate. Of course, if the call is about “legal matters,” it will likely be a scam. Most people realize the Sheriff’s Office has a way with legal matters that typically doesn’t involve a phone call.
