Rutherford County, TN - Gun safety is paramount for all firearm owners, and securing firearms properly can save lives. The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security offers a free cable lock to assist gun owners in safe storage practices. This 15-inch cable lock is compatible with most shotguns, rifles, pistols, and revolvers, working by running through the firearm's barrel or action to prevent firing.

With a secure keyed deadbolt locking mechanism and a 4-pin cylinder, the cable lock provides added protection. While using the cable lock is essential, it is also recommended that gun owners employ additional safe storage measures.

Storing firearms with engaged cable locks in locked gun cases, safes, or lock boxes, and keeping ammunition in separate locked containers, enhances safety. Furthermore, it's advised to store keys to the cable lock separately from the firearm in a secure location that is difficult to access.

Gun owners can request their free cable lock from designated pickup locations during regular business hours. Locations for Rutherford County are Murfreesboro Driver Services Center at 1035 Samsonite Boulevard and the Murfreesboro Express Service Center at 3906 Blaze Drive. Prior to visiting, individuals can call to confirm the availability of cable locks.
