MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Rutherford County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Kevin Henderson was named Middle Tennessee Jail Administrator of the Year on Thursday by the Tennessee Corrections Institute (TCI).

TCI Executive Director William Wall presented the award to Henderson during the organization’s annual training conference. The honor recognizes Henderson’s leadership and operational improvements within the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center.

Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh praised the achievement, noting that the award reflects Henderson’s extensive background in correctional oversight. Fitzhugh stated that Henderson brings a wealth of experience that has been directly applied to the local organization.

Henderson, who assumed his role as deputy chief in November 2021, previously served a 30-year career with the Shelby County Division of Corrections and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. Despite the individual recognition, Henderson attributed the success to the detention center staff.

"It’s our award," Henderson said. "They bought in to what I was saying and I think that’s changed the culture here. I had the ideas. They had the execution."

In the official nomination, Training Lt. David Hutsell highlighted Henderson’s ability to bridge operational gaps between various law enforcement divisions. Hutsell noted that Henderson’s experience in large-scale county systems allowed him to share critical lessons that have strengthened interdivisional collaboration.

Under Henderson’s leadership, the facility has focused on professional development and servant leadership. Hutsell credited the deputy chief with fostering a culture of accountability and mutual respect among staff and residents alike.

Henderson remains focused on ensuring deputies are well-trained and supported, emphasizing a professional environment designed to improve both morale and community trust.
